Meet (and write with and make stuff with) Carter Higgins!
I am available for virtual visits with eager writers and artists of all ages! After looking this list over, begin the booking process with this contact form.
If any of these offerings aren’t quite right for your group, reach out here and let me know your needs. I’d love to craft something specific with you, especially if you are looking to supplement gaps that have proven tricky with remote learning.
In over fifteen years of experience as an educator—both as an elementary school librarian and more recently, online teaching for The Writing Barn, Storyteller Academy, and Creativity Camp—I have taught all ages of learners. I’ve taught kindergarteners through grownups in classrooms and libraries, giant auditoriums, and most importantly—virtually. I can expertly tailor any workshop to your audience, whatever its size or age.
All visits will include time for Q+A. I am available on any meeting platform that you are using, and require an adult moderator to be present at all times.
Small Group Writing Workshops (45-55 minutes)
For individual classes or homeschool groups. This workshop will be tailored to your class’s grade level and/or age range. You can select any of my picture books as a mentor text for our writing workshops. This session includes follow-up materials to use in the classroom after our visit. Cost: $350
Small Group Presentations (45-55 minutes)
For individual classes or homeschool groups. This presentation will be tailored to your class’s grade level or age range. This presentation will focus on how an author comes up with ideas and creates a picture book. We will take a look at observing, rewriting, and reading—all the habits of a great writer. This session includes follow-up materials to use in the classroom after our visit. Cost: $250
Large Group Presentations (45-55 minutes)
For multiple classrooms grouped by age range (K-2; 3-5, or whatever groupings make sense for you). This presentation will focus on how an author comes up with ideas and creates a picture book. We will take a look at observing, rewriting, and reading—all the habits of a great writer. No participant limit (unless your platform has one)! Cost: $300
Art Workshops (45-55 minutes)
For groups of all sizes and ages.* Get a sneak peek at Circle Under Berry, Carter’s author/illustrator debut, planned for 2021! This workshop will use Circle Under Berry as inspiration for a hands on collage workshop using simple, easy-to-find materials. Get ready to see things differently! No participant limit (unless your platform has one!), but the smaller the group, the more interactive this session will be. Take a look at some sample projects here. Cost: $350
*Grownups, this could include you and a group of your friends! Would you want a thoughtfully moderated and gently taught art playdate with your friends? Invite me over, virtually! Letting ourselves play is essential to a healthy mindset, and it’s just plain fun. I’d love to get messy with you. Unlike virtual school visits, I can host this for us via Zoom. Cost: $20 per grownup.
A Note About Book Sales:
I don’t require any book sales as part of these virtual offerings. But if you’d like to order books, I’d be happy to provide an order form and connect you to my local independent bookstore. I will mail personalized bookplates to one location after our visit. Thank you from me, Once Upon a Time Bookstore, and the USPS!
A Few More Things:
Why pay for an author visit, even virtually? Author Caroline Starr Rose has some excellent thoughts here.
Not quite ready for a paid visit? I occasionally schedule FREE read-alouds with Q+A via Skype, Zoom, or Google Hangouts. Often, these coincide with special events like new book releases, World Read Aloud Day, or Valentine’s Day. Sign up for my newsletter here to stay posted.
More questions? Let me know!
